Cannabis Production and QC

Ultrasonic energy is employed in several ways during the production of cannabis and ensuring that the product is of the highest quality. It is also a preferred method of removing gummy contaminants and other unwanted residues from processing glassware and similar equipment.

1. Quality control; sample mixing for extraction; analytical testing
Elma S Series for Cannabis Quality Control

Most regulated markets require all cannabis products to be tested for efficacy as well as for contaminants (i.e. pesticides, mycotoxins, heavy metals, microbes, residual solvents). Sonication in an ultrasonic cleaner accomplishes this because it deposits energy into the solvent/matrix system effectively speeding the process of extraction and dissolution.

Product is placed in flasks along with a recommended solvent. Flasks are partially immersed in a sonicator bath containing a surfactant. Ultrasonic energy passes through the flask walls to act on the contents.

The Elma S300H is especially designed to perform this and similar tasks in the cannabis lab.

Features

  • High ultrasonic power per unit volume for extraction prior to unwanted heat buildup
  • "Normal" fixed frequency for homogenizing, emulsifying, dispersing, solubilizing, dissolving, digesting and mixing
  • "Degas" oil, HPLC solvents, ethanol; remove trapped air from fresh cleaning solutions
  • "Sweep" for uniform cleaning of equipment

2. Cleaning mass spectrometry and processing equipment; processing large batches
Cleaning mass spectrometry and processing equipment with Elma P Series Ultrasonic Cleaner

Mass spectrometers are commonly used instruments in a cannabis laboratory. An ultrasonic cleaner is an efficient method to remove organic residues from electrodes, chromatography injectors and inlets. These cleaners also speed the removal of gums, waxes and other residues from glass, plastic, ceramic, metals and similar equipment. The Elmasonic P series expands on features of the S300H and is an ideal solution for these tasks as well as to develop/refine processing steps in large batches.

Features

  • Highest average and peak ultrasonic power
  • 4 modes: sweep, normal, degas and pulse handle most lab/production requirements
  • Select 37 or 80 kHz for tough or gentle cleaning
  • Six tank sizes from 0.75 gal to 7.5 gal
  • Control panel displays frequency, power, time and temperature

3. Cleaning Processing Equipment
Non-flammable solvent

For R & D and processing applications flasks and beakers containing product are placed in a solution of water and a wetting agent. Containers need only to be partially immersed. Ultrasonic energy passes through the container walls to act on the contents. This results in deposition of difficult-to-remove residues inside flasks, test tubes and beakers. A thorough cleaning is necessary not only to ensure a quality product but also protect the substantial investments made in cannabis processing glassware and other tools.

Removing residues from the interior of containers is done the same way as processing operations except that the containers are filled with a biodegradable ultrasonic cleaning solution.

For external cleaning, these solutions are prepared in the ultrasonic cleaner tank. To thoroughly clean external surfaces of processing equipment a larger ultrasonic cleaner is required with suitable depth to enable full immersion of the equipment.

After the cleaning cycle rinse and inspect the equipment. Cleaning solutions can be used for subsequent cycles or, if too dirty discarded according to local regulations.

Examples

  • Elma Lab Clean A20SF (surfactant-free) for glassware, graduated cylinders, volumetric vessels and pipettes diluted to approximately 1% with water
  • Elma Tec Clean A1 for glass, ceramics, plastics and optics diluted to 3 to 10% with water; rinses residue-free
  • Elma Tec Clean A4, a universal cleaner to remove a broad range of contaminants from glass, ceramics, plastics and rubber diluted to 1 to 5% with water
